Do you need a GTIN to sell on Etsy?
For handmade and vintage listings, no. Etsy has no mandatory barcode field, and a one-of-a-kind item could not sensibly carry a shared product number anyway. You only need a licensed GTIN if you are reselling manufactured goods that already have one, if you plan to move the same products into retail or onto Amazon, or if you start using a fulfilment service that expects scannable inbound stock.

Use the same SKU in three places: your Etsy listing's SKU field, the label on the storage bin or bag, and your own stock sheet. The barcode is just a fast way to move that string into a search box — scan it into the Etsy search bar or your inventory spreadsheet and you land on the right row without typing.
Code 128 is the format to use here. It handles letters and digits, packs numeric runs compactly, and every cheap USB or Bluetooth scanner reads it out of the box as if it were a keyboard.

Printing labels that survive a workshop
You do not need a thermal printer to start. Sheets of A4 or letter address labels through an ordinary laser printer work well for bin labels, and the SVG download scales to whatever cell size your sheet uses without blurring. If you print several hundred labels a month, a 57 mm or 4-inch direct thermal printer pays for itself quickly and never runs out of toner mid-run.
Practical settings that hold up: module width around 2 px with the bar height near 60–90 px, human-readable text switched on so you can still read the SKU when a label is scratched, and plenty of white space. Do not shrink the label until the quiet zones disappear — that is the single most common reason a home-printed barcode refuses to scan.

A QR code buyers will actually scan
The insert card in the parcel is where a QR code earns its place. Sensible destinations: your shop's review page, a care-instructions page, a custom-order enquiry form, or a short video showing how the piece is made. Avoid pointing it at a generic homepage — scanning takes effort, and a page that answers the question they already had is what makes it feel worthwhile.
Use static codes like the ones here so the card you printed last year still works this year, and point them at a URL on a domain you control if you can, so you can change the destination later without reprinting. Keep the printed code at least 2 cm square, and test it with your own phone before ordering five hundred cards.
