Small symbols for identifiers and text
Data Matrix is a two-dimensional barcode with a solid L-shaped border and alternating modules along its other edges. Those patterns help an imager locate the symbol. It can carry more information in a small area than many linear barcodes, which makes it useful for component identifiers, internal asset labels and compact printed references.
This generator creates square ECC 200 Data Matrix symbols from the text you enter. Symbol size increases as the data grows, so a longer message creates more modules. A higher module count does not mean that the printed barcode should stay the same physical size. If you hold the overall dimensions constant, each module becomes smaller and harder for a printer and scanner to resolve.
The page generates ordinary Data Matrix, not GS1 DataMatrix. Those formats share a visual appearance, but GS1 requires specific control characters and structured data conventions. Do not use a plain text symbol as a substitute for regulated medical-device or pharmaceutical labelling. Confirm the precise format and applicable requirements with the receiving system.
Prepare a symbol that can be read
Start with the shortest identifier that does the job. If the scanner looks up a database record, the barcode may only need its key rather than a long description. The generator accepts text within its supported capacity and reports invalid or excessive input. Inspect the decoded result when using non-ASCII characters, because a receiving application also needs to interpret the character encoding correctly.
Keep the blank quiet zone around all four sides. Do not add a logo, round the modules, obscure the finder border or place text inside the symbol. Error correction can help recover damaged data, but it is not permission to remove parts of a new barcode deliberately. Use strong contrast and avoid transparent output over a patterned surface.
For print, download SVG and choose a final size that gives every module enough printer dots. Preserve square proportions. A sharp large preview can hide a poor small physical result, especially on rough stock or glossy packaging. Print one at the intended size and test at the actual working distance and lighting conditions. Check the smallest and longest values your workflow is likely to use.
A laser scanner intended only for one-dimensional barcodes will not read this format; use a compatible imaging scanner or an application that explicitly supports Data Matrix. Some phone camera apps recognize QR codes but not Data Matrix. A successful scan verifies a particular symbol and setup, not industrial print quality, direct-part marking suitability or compliance certification.

Questions
Frequently asked questions
Is this GS1 DataMatrix?
No. This page creates ordinary Data Matrix ECC 200 text symbols. GS1 DataMatrix requires additional structure that this tool does not provide.
Why does my phone not recognize it?
The camera app may support only certain barcode types. Try a reader that explicitly supports Data Matrix, then test with the intended operational scanner.
Does generation register an identifier?
No. It only turns supplied text into a symbol. It does not allocate identifiers or register UPC/EAN numbers with GS1.
