When EAN-8 is the right choice
EAN-8 is not a convenience format. GS1 issues these numbers only when a product genuinely cannot carry an EAN-13 — the usual test is a printable area under roughly 40 cm² or a package too narrow for a 30 mm symbol. Think lip balms, single-serve sachets, chewing gum, cigarette packs, small cosmetics and sample sizes.
The reason for the gatekeeping is supply: EAN-8 has only a few million possible numbers worldwide, against billions for EAN-13. They are allocated one product at a time rather than as a company prefix, so you cannot buy a block and assign them yourself.
Before applying, check whether reducing an EAN-13 to 80% magnification would fit. At that size an EAN-13 is roughly 29.8 mm wide, which is narrower than people expect, and using one avoids a separate application entirely.
The number
What the eight digits contain
There is no company prefix in an EAN-8. The first two or three digits are the GS1 prefix of the issuing organisation, the next four or five are the item reference assigned directly by GS1, and the last is the mod-10 check digit calculated exactly as it is for EAN-13 — weights of 3 and 1 alternating from the right of the payload.
Because the item reference is assigned centrally, two products from completely unrelated companies can hold consecutive EAN-8 numbers. That is normal and causes no problems, but it does mean you cannot infer anything about a manufacturer from the number.

Size and quiet zones
Nominal EAN-8 is 26.73 mm × 21.31 mm with the same 0.33 mm X-dimension as EAN-13, scalable from 80% to 200%. The quiet zones are seven modules on each side, narrower than EAN-13's asymmetric eleven and seven, but proportionally just as important: on a small package there is rarely spare white space, and a design that runs artwork right up to the bars is the most common cause of failed scans on small goods.
The symbol splits into two groups of four digits with a centre guard between them, and the human-readable digits sit under the bars rather than beside them, as they do on an EAN-13. If your artwork places the number somewhere else, keep the version in the barcode itself intact — the printed digits are a fallback for manual entry, not decoration.
Other options
If EAN-8 still will not fit
For genuinely tiny items there are two routes left. GS1 DataBar was designed for exactly this problem and is widely supported at grocery tills, particularly for loose produce. Alternatively, the barcode can move onto outer packaging or a hang tag rather than the item, which is standard practice for jewellery and cosmetics.
For internal use — your own stock counts, a market stall, a workshop — none of this applies. Any format your own scanner reads is fine, and Code 128 will carry more information in less space than any retail symbology.
